Toronto Centre for the Arts
In the past eight years the Toronto Centre for the Arts has retained our firm to make improvements to the interior and exterior of the building. The works accomplished to date have been incrementally designed and built to fit with the TCA's annual capital budget. The project illustrated on this sheet is the Guardrail Extension project, which was necessitated when a patron accidentally knocked a drink off the guardrail. It landed on another patron's head. We were required to design a guardrail extension to prevent drinks from falling over the rail but to fit aesthetically with the original design. The design had to be assembled on site and bolted, as welding equipment was not permitted. Our design uses three stainless steel bands like staff lines on musical scores. There are 290 meters of guardrail in the lobby. Our firm designed the piece, prepared contract documents, bid out the work and managed the project on the owner's behalf.
